A New Beginning

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." Isaiah 43:18-19

With everything that has taken place at Shalom Children’s Center (corruption and extreme child abuse), and the fact that to fight the battle in court will take a long time and a lot of money, Shalom Christian Missions has made a unanimous decision (by the board) to disassociate ourselves with Simon Ochola and Shalom Children's Center. A decision was also made to move forward to serve the children and to begin again in the Nyasoti community. The people of Nyasoti made it very clear to our mission team that the need is so very great for us to continue to work with them and that if we left they would be worse off than when we had originally started.
Our board feels very committed to serving the community that God has brought us too. We are certain that this time it will be handled in the proper way. We have a lawyer in Kenya advising us as to each legal step we need to take, plus God has blessed us with some wonderful contacts in that nation.

The name of our new project is NEW BEGINNINGS. This name has already been approved and is registered as a Community Based Organization in Kenya. We are well on our way to making it an NGO in Kenya. It will be a New Beginning for SCM, for the community, and for every child that comes to this project.
As for those who sponsor children, we cannot be sure that they will become part of our project but we are sure that now there is a choice. We will continue to pray for those whom we have supported in the past for God to protect them, but we will move ahead knowing that this center will have the best interest of the children and the community at heart. We hope that many of you will continue with us in prayer and/or financial support. All donations will continue to be made to Shalom Christian Missions for our New Beginnings.

This is truly a New Beginning!!!

Expedition 2011-A Trip to Remember

Expedition 2011 was a trip to remember. It was full of turns and curves ever single day. Each person on the trip learned and grew in many ways. They learned about the power of prayer. They grew in understanding the "Fear Not!" that God has for us 365 days of the year. They witnessed miracles and overcame disappointments.
The team that traveled to Kenya in July/Aug was a powerful witness to God and there is no doubt that they were chosen "...for such A Time as This." (This years theme)

The first two weeks, the team had to come to terms with only seeing a few children from our former children’s center, as they made their way, by foot, the 6 miles to the place we were staying. We had been barred from going to the center (by a court order) shortly before we departed. Two days after we arrived in Kenya, that court order mysteriously changed to prevent us from communicating with anyone in the community, including praying for people. No one seemed to know how this could change (since this is illegal) but we could get no answers. The team felt frustrated but continued to walk in faith and as our bus drove towards Nyasoti that first day, we were overwhelmed by the reception from the community as men, women, and children waited to meet us through tears, cheers, and so manyThe community greets us!The community greets us! hugs. It was beautiful! Any frustration soon left the team as they grew to understand the purpose behind their trip.  To see oppression lifted from this rural community. We engaged in the mighty spiritual battle that lay ahead. One night the sky lit up with white, yellow, red, and purple lightening. A glimpse of the battle that was raging in the heavens.
The team was undaunted and continued to bless the widows and children of the community where we were staying. They truly won the hearts of Nyandiwa. The local officials of that community met with us and opened their hearts and doors to our team.

When the first 2 week group departed, the 1 month group remained in Buche village serving through visits and crusades in that village. It was a busy few days and the team was thrilled to have a real African experience (and a break from the battle), complete with living in mud huts. As the second 2 week group arrived, a solid foundation of prayer had been laid and some doors began to open. On a day that the team committed to prayer walk Magunga/Nyasoti, the enemy became very confused, as we walked and prayed for the community. The children were being whisked away on a bus and this put the community in an uproar. For some reason there were news reporters in this remote area and the result was part of the news report that made it on the national news in Kenya. The team witnessed hired thugs (we know they were hired because they told us so, as the team prayed for them), they witnessed a village angry about the oppression, and at the same time they witnessed the love and joy of the same community towards them. They also had the opportunity to witness sitting before the area District Commissioner who a2011 Team2011 Teamccused us and the village of causing division, while the enemy tried to hide his face.
As that entire day unfolded, my 13 year old son commented to me, "Mom, this is like a Bible story, only we are living it!" And I would say the rest of the team felt the same way as we knew we had been engaged in helping this community break free of the fear and intimidation they have lived under with corrupt officials and bribes being paid, for so many years.
It is hard for those of us who live in freedom to understand what is happening to so many others who live in corrupt nations, that proclaim freedom. But this team has been a witness to all that took place and the battle that is raging for so many souls in the spiritual realm.
I know this team has been changed and will never forget how God used them ‘for such a time as this’ and how God will continue to grow and live strong in their lives forever because of the battle they engaged in for righteousness and justice, in a rural village in Kenya.
When asked, who wants to go next year, almost every hand went up. To God be the glory!!

Missionary to Nyasoti

As the Mission Team of 2011 prepared to leave Nyasoti, we felt torn between our desire to return to our Missionary John ZMissionary John Zfamilies in the USA and our desire to continue on to help our new families in Nyasoti, Kenya. The team was so moved by the beautiful people of this community, but we felt secure in knowing that we did not leave them alone, we left them with a full time missionary. John Z, better know to those in Nyasoti as Grandpa John or Great John. John is a retired jack of all trades. His last position before retiring, was running a farm. He is full of knowledge on animal husbandry and general maintenance, plus his years of working as a foreman have given him great insight for the job before him. John's heart for the Lord makes him a real blessing to the people of this community. We know that John will impart much about His relationship with the Father as well as a true walk with the Lord.
Please pray for this man as he faces the challenges with the community to create a New Beginning. John has a wife, Andrea, in the USA and 3 married daughters and LOTS of grand and great grandchildren

A Courageous Village

Our ministry had to take With the people of NyasotiWith the people of Nyasotia long hard look before starting a New Beginning in the same community in rural Kenya and questioned if this would be a wise decision. But after spending a month with these beautiful people and seeing the ups and downs they face and really becoming immersed in their culture it became an easy choice for those of us on the board, who had the privilege of getting to know these courageous people. These people have faced oppression caused by fear and intimidation for so many years. Most know who God is but have little knowledge of really knowing and following our Savior. They are babes in faith, However in spite of that they are willing to care for so many orphans and widows. They are willing to give away land and work hard to see their community become stronger. As one elder said to me, "We know that our children are our spears. It is through them getting an education that we can fight the enemy." This is the spirit of these people. How could we desert them in this hour of need?

Expeditions 2012

Our plans are already underway for 4 Expeditions to Kenya in 2012. As we returned from our last adventure in Kenya, it seemed that God had already opened the door for more people to serve and experience rural bush life in Africa. We have people ready and willing to go on each trip.

Building Starts AGAIN!!

As we begin a New Beginning in Nyasoti, we will start by building some temporary classroom for the children. The mission team from 2011 has made a donation to build the first 4 classrooms. This will hold grade 1-4. The other children in our program will attend the public school. We have made arrangements with the public school headmaster to have our children attend there until our classrooms are ready. We will help supply the public school with some teachers paid through SCM. This will enable all the students to continue learning while our new project moves forward.

Housing for the children in need. We have made arrangements with many wonderful people in Nyasoti to care for the children who need housing at this time until we can build the houses needed for the children to live. These families will be trained and held accountable for the children they volunteer to care for, while we will provide for the children's needs. As we build, we are looking into less expensive, smaller houses for the children that will hold 8-10 children, each with a foster mother. This will give the children a real family life.
Please pray for all the building, plans, etc to go through the proper channels. And for the finances to continue the New Beginning.

Child of the Month

Meet Mourine!

MourineMourine

Mourine is 11 years old and in grade 3. Her parents have both died from Malaria. She lives with her aunt. Mourine likes to play ball, the color white, and Swahili is her favorite subject in school.

Pray for Mourine's health. Pray for her aunt who is struggling to support her. Pray for her to be able to focus in school. Pray for someone to sponsor Mourine.

As we begin a New Beginning, we have a flood of many children who are greatly in need of sponsor. Many are being admitted new to the program and many are coming to our New Beginnings from our former center.

Please pray for the many children who are in need to find sponsors who will love and care for them.

With our missionary on the ground in Nyasoti, we are able to grasp a greater sense of what is truly needed for this community.

If God places it on your heart, please consider sponsoring one of the children who are in need. I know it will bless the child and I know it blesses the Father’s heart.
