A heart to please the Father!
What does it take to sponsor a child.? A simple question often asked. The cost is minimal. What it really takes...is a heart to please our Father. His will, is that not one of these precious children, He created should suffer. That is why He will break hearts towards those who are suffering. He wants US to care enough to do something about their need. So often, here in America, we have so many, many things that we end up devoting our lives to things. Instead, God wants us to devote our lives Him & to others.
Below is the story of how God is working in the lives of young people to touch the world with His love:
My name is Abby and I am a middle school student in York, PA.
Judy prayers are answered!
When I first heard my youth pastor’s idea of sponsoring a child, I was hesitant to agree with him. I wasn’t sure I could donate anything, not with my small allowance of 75 cents a week. But when I saw the email he sent me, my heart went out to the poor kids in Magunga, Kenya. I then realized that anything I could give would help, and how much I take for granted. I knew that the Lord was calling me; God wanted me to set up a fund center for a child in Kenya.
After two weeks, I knew that I had done the right thing. My youth group, CREW (Caring, Relationship, Evangelism, Worship), had raised more than fifty dollars! I can’t wait to write to our little girl, Judy, and watch her grow and develop in Christ. I praise God for letting my youth group be able to make the difference in the life of a little girl, and I thank Shalom Christian Missions for allowing people to be able to access this wonderful opportunity. Praise the Lord!
Is God touching your heart to help? We sometimes wonder how God can allow children to suffer in different parts of the world. Why won’t He just do something? Perhaps He is asking you the same thing!
Be an answer to a child’s prayer, sponsor a child TODAY!
Donations for Kenya
Often people will ask to donate items for us to take to Kenya when our teams travel.
Below is the list of donated items we will receive:
- Clothing-light weight, all sizes (No XXL). Mostly children’s clothing.
- Vitamins and over the counter meds.
- Mosquito nets—the type you find in camping supply stores, with hookups at 4 corners.
- Vinyl mattress covers-for twin size beds
- Twin size sheet sets
- Puzzles, toys, and games for the children (nothing large or heavy)
- And any size monetary donations for supplies.
At this point, we still plan to take a gift bag for each of the sponsored children.
Thanks for your help!

Well Project
The well project is still under way. They have struck clean water and the drilling company is now in the process of building the well for the children’s center. It should be completed by the middle of April.
The well is completely paid for, thanks to so many of you who gave to this project. How can we thank you for all that you have done to make clean water at the children’s center possible. This was only a dream before God touched so many hearts to help make this a reality. May God bless you every time you turn on your water, to remember that you helped provide this for children in Africa.
A note of thanks from our Children’s center’s director:
On behalf of the Children and staff at Shalom Children center in Kenya, I would like to thank all of you who prayerfully committed, financially committed, and as well as morally committed to help provide us with a well!!! We truly appreciate that you found in your hearts to help provide these to us and it is our prayer ...that God comes and blesses you according to His mighty ways! One day He will say to you "when I was thirsty you gave me water to drink". Then you will say to Him "But when Lord?" Then He will remind you "when you did provide a well for some children in Kenya". It is our request that you keep praying with this work here and I would like to encourage you all that your work here is not in vain. It is preserving lots of precious lives from going to waste in a forgotten part of the world!
God bless you all,
Pastor Simon Ochola,
SCC Children’s Center, Director
Building News
GREAT NEWS!!
The two houses are officially finished. There is still some need for electrical wiring and furnishings, but these have been put on hold until some of the new classrooms are built. PRAISE GOD for building these houses for the children. Currently 50 children live in these 2 homes. PRAISE GOD for all of you who have continued to give to make this a reality for these precious children.
These classrooms are so extremely needed that the children center’s director has asked to postpone some of the other needs to see these be placed.
Currently the children walk 2 miles to school, each way. Going to school is a long walk that starts around 7 AM so that the children arrive in time to eat and then start classes. But that is not the worst part. That walk is mostly down hill. Coming home, the children have the 2 mile walk and a climb up the hill to their homes. It is taking a toll
Current classroomson the children , especially the 2-6 year olds. This is becoming more than they can manage.
Plus, the current classrooms for the younger children is an old, rented, metal structure, that is in great need of repair.
Can you help us build some new classrooms to the new location of the children’s center?
The cost per classroom is approx $7,000. These are not fancy classrooms but will be much better than they currently have and very suitable for the children’s needs.
All donations are tax deductible and go directly to help the building.
Makrias Christian School News
The first school semester for 2010, will end in mid April. The children will then have a short break before they begin the second semester. The baby class through grade 3 will break for 3 weeks and grade 4 through grade 7 will have a 2 week break.
Dawn with Lavender-her sponsored childThis past semester the children had sports as their extra curricular activity focus. Lavender was once again selected to move to the next level of competition in girls soccer. Valentine was selected to move on for the boys soccer. This was not just for the school but for the entire Magunga area.. What an accomplishment.
We are so proud of how God has been able to change the life and well being of a beautiful child like Lavendar. Before coming to the center, Lavendar was diagnosed as HIV +. In this part of the world, that means a life of shame and despair. Lavendar now lives a life full of hope and has proven that God has a purpose, even for her.
Praise God for Lavendar and children like her who now have hope because of people like so many of you
Child of the Month
Meet Irine!
Irine
Irine is 4 years old and lives in Kenya.
Life is very hard for Irine since her father died (most likely from AIDS) in 2005. A cause is not listed for his death and this is common in this part of the world where you are shamed if you have AIDS. Her mother died in 2008 from Malaria.
Irine lives with an aunt who struggles to care for her plus her own family.
She attends the nursery class at the center’s school and appears to be in good health.
Please pray for Irine to remain healthy and for her needs to be met.
Pray for Irine to have enough food and adequate clothing.
Irine is in great need of a sponsor. Please pray that God would touch the heart of someone to answer Irine’s prayer for a sponsor.
Magunga/Nyasoti News
Along the road to Magunga
- Magunga has electricity!! Since the beginning of time, this community has lived without the luxury of electricity. This past year the lines were completed and just recently the power supply to this part of the world has been made accessible. Praise God for this added convenience. Pray that God would provide the means for people to connect.
- Planting has taken place in 3 fields, for this growing season. We thank God for continually providing the proper weather at the proper timing. Pray for God to provide another good harvest this growing season.
- The church in Nyasoti is in the midst of doing fundraising to erect a structure for their services. Praise God for this new congregation and for their efforts to obtain a humble house of worship. Pray for God to protect and continue to grow this fellowship.
