2016 Was So Blessed!

What an amazing year 2016 has been for Shalom Christian Missions and New Beginnings Children's Center. Many of you might be aware that in January of 2016, I resigned from my full time job in the USA in order to dedicate more time living at New Beginnings in Kenya. Currently my goal is to spend no less than 6 months out of the year at the children’s center. This has helped us to better understand the needs and overall operations of the center and the children. This year we worked to improve the operations and handling of the children. Our staff have come a long way and have shown great improvement. We have a long way to go but we are headed in a positive direction.

Some of our accomplishments for 2016:

  • We have begun counseling targeted children. We have devised a discipline and reward program that seems to be helping the children to both follow the rules and directions and to inspire them to go beyond what is expected.
  • We have helped our staff understand more about what is expected of them so that they can implement and do their jobs better.
  • We have worked closely with the government offices in our area and in doing so have gained great support and respect.
  • We have endeavored to work within the community to discover areas of weakness where we can help, for the sake of the children.
  • We have identified children with special needs and focused on helping them to learn and then to place them into vocational schools, if needed, to teach them a job so they can be successful in life. We have started evening tutoring for our children who are struggling with academics.
  • We have begun extracurricular outings with some of the children (nature walks, etc). We expanded our playing field to now include a soccer field and a volleyball court. We opened up a play room for the younger children, where they can access toys and games during playtime on the weekends.
  • We celebrated as 9 young men finished their program with New Beginnings. These young men are preparing to go onto college or into the job market.
  • We have gotten a stronger teaching staff than ever before, whom we monitor to make sure they are giving our children their best.
  • Our Sunday Chapel Service has gotten much more structure and we can see the children beginning to grow as Disciples of Christ.
  • On the building side, we have added 2 more classrooms, one in primary and one in secondary.
  • We have added secondary school offices, a secondary girls dorm, latrine, and bath house.
  • We have gotten a new gate and gate house to increase our security.
  • We have added housing for secondary teachers, in order to hire qualified teachers from outside the area and give them a place to live.
  • We have added a medical room and infirmary and updated our offices.
  • The girls dorm was repainted and indoor bathing rooms were added. Plus lots more.

Our God is a God of MIRACLES and we see them daily!

We believe that these changes will make New Beginnings a much more conducive place for all the children to live, grow, and learn. That was the goal and that is what we are seeing take place. Even missionaries who have been there in the past and recently returned have noted that there is a certain peace in the atmosphere that was not there before. The peace of God.

I thank all of you for joining us on this journey of love. Without you and your support, this could not be possible. We still have so much more to achieve and one way you can bless us is to share what we are doing with others, that they might want to also help a child(ren). There is still great need. We would also love to come and share with any group, no matter the size, about the miracles that God is doing at New Beginnings.

We look forward to what God has planned for Shalom Christian Missions and New Beginnings in 2017.

Remember us when you are making your end of year donations. There is still so much to do.
May God bless you now and always.
Merry Christmas!

NEW, NEW, NEW!!

Since we will see many students finish high school in the future (and that is when our sponsor program ends) we are making a way for those who would like to invest in those students who desire an education beyond high school.

Shalom Christian Missions has started a college scholarship program.
You  can make a one time donation to help a student or you can give monthly. You can give to a certain student or make a general donation to help those in most need.

Let's make a way for these students to go above and beyond what they have ever dreamed.

Expedition 2017

"What will I do on a mission trip?"

That is often the question people ask.
The answer:  What is God calling YOU to do?

From construction work to Bible school, to medical care, taking gifts to widows in their mud homes, to sharing the Gospel.

Our teams have done it ALL!

What is God calling you to do?
Not sure...take a step of faith and see what God shows up to do.
It will be more than you ever dreamed or imagined.

Our missionaries stay in missionary housing of brick construction, on the secure grounds of our children's center, in a very beautiful, remote area of Kenya. Spend time immersed in the culture and lives of those who call New Beginnings Children's Center HOME.

Mission News

Missionary Intern, Carrie, is preparing for Christmas with the children of New Beginnings.
She has left her family and friends in America to be immersed in life in rural Kenya and she is being blessed.

Earlier this month she went shopping and is now almost ready to celebrate the holidays with her new family in Kenya.

What a blessing she is for all the children who live at New Beginnings.

What about you? Would you consider giving a few months to serve and live in Kenya?

If you are looking for a place to serve in remote Kenya, then look no further than serving at our children's center. We have over 100 children who call this HOME and many more who come to New Beginnings everyday to receive a primary and secondary education. Join us and be blessed as you bless them!

School News

Both schools have been busy this month meeting and planning for the next school year. Preparations are underway to make sure that school runs smoothly and effectively for the benefit of the children and the community.

The new school year will start on January 4th.

Uniforms are already being prepared as part of Operation Christmas Shoes.
We are still accepting donations! For $25, you can provide a new uniform, shoes, and socks for a child.  Visit here and choose Operation Christmas Shoes in the drop down menu to donate!

Primary School

A new Primary school latrine is almost finished. Just a bit of finish work remains. A new classroom was finished last fall and will be prepared and ready for the students to use in January. Repairs are taking place so that the classrooms are all new and fresh for the students first day in 2017.

Secondary School

A new Secondary classroom will be opened this year giving us a much larger Biology/Chemistry room. These are mandatory classes for all our high school students and a larger classroom will accommodate our growing class sizes. Our overall student body is expected to increase as our school makes more and more improvements to become the best school in the area.

Building News

A new access road to New Beginnings became part of our overall building cost for our new kitchen, after our current road became impassable for supply trucks to maneuver. We are so excited that the new road is now open. We had a choice of hiring a front end loader/backhoe or hiring the people from the community to dig the road by hand. In wanting to keep more income in our local community we decided to hire the community to dig the road.

The first step was to hire a government road surveyor to mark where the official road was located. After settling a few squabbles within the community, since a house had been built over the land designated for the government road, the team went to work digging out the road. They did a terrific job and we now have a much friendlier road leading to New Beginnings. Our suppliers are all very happy and the community is also very happy.
Now we can move forward with the kitchen.

Can you help us with a donation to our building fund?

Can you help us replace this unsafe kitchen with a new one?

We are excited to say that we are now collecting donations for Phase IV - Phase III building has been completed!
PRAISE GOD for all that HE is doing!!

Phase IV Projects Cost  Donated  Still Needed

Child of the Month!

Meet Elector!

Elector has one year to finish high school and has lost her sponsor. She is 19 years old and is a good student. As a total orphan, Elector has struggled in her past with many things and made some mistakes. As a result she has a little girl. She wants a chance to improve her life and knows that by finishing high school will do just that. She is determined to see this happen but she does need help. Please pray for that Elector will not lose hope and that a sponsor would come forward for her very soon.

New Beginnings News!

It has been a busy month at New Beginnings Children's Center in Kenya. The start of the new access road to New Beginnings brought a flurry of activity. First, community squabbles needed to be dispelled after the government surveyor determined that a house had been built over the right of way for the government road. Once we assured everyone we would not make them tear down a house and the government asked for other land be given in place of that land, things moved forward peacefully.

Those in the community who helped dig the road worked happily together knowing that the extra money would be used for food on their table or a new roof over their heads. This is a community where opportunity for earning more money is not taken lightly. The new road looks great.Pray for peace and unity to remain within this community.

Our vehicle was finally repaired after a breakdown in the summer. The day the job was completed, our director was driving it back to New Beginnings, and he was hit by a drunk driver. Fortunately the engine does not seem to have taken any of the damage but the left side of the car needs body work and the rear of the car needs some parts. We praise God that no one was hurt in the accident. Our director and 2 children were in the car at the time. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene and the police are looking for him.

Please pray for the needed funds to repair the car, once again. Also, pray God's protection over the vehicle.

Work continues to take place on landscaping and overall maintenance at New Beginnings. School classrooms will be repaired and made ready for the new school year that will begin the first week of January.

Children in Need!!

Can you help a child?

Someone recently asked me what the difference is in between a partial sponsor and a full sponsor.
The difference is that as a full sponsor, you completely cover the cost for supporting that particular child ($80 per month). They receive food, clothing, medical care, an education, and a place to live.

As a partial sponsor you pay for half and someone else covers the other half ($40 per month for each, a total of $80). The child still receives the full benefit but one person is not responsible for paying the whole thing.

Whether you are a full sponsor are a partial sponsor, you are still loved, cherished, and prayed for by the child.  The reality is that a partial sponsor is just a good option for someone on a tighter budget.

Please consider sponsoring with us. 100% of your donation goes to help the children.
